The train stops at Cumbres Pass to take on water and to prepare the brakes for the next portion of the ride. The train will travel down a 4% grade between Cumbres Pass and Chama Station. A 4% grade is equivalent to descending 4 feet for every 100 feet horizontally. This is a severe grade for a railroad.
The Cumbres Section House was built in 1882 and the Chief Car Inspector's house dates back to 1911. The docent on the open car will be talking about the very interesting operations of the D&RGW on this pass.
