This 366 foot tunnel was blasted out of igneous and metamorphic rock with black powder in 1880. The Precambrian rock forming Toltec Gorge is so hard that shoring or tunnel lining was and is not required.

The second picture shows a tell tail. Back in the days of the Denver & Rio Grande, these were used to let train crew who may be on the roof of the freight cars, know when the tunnel was near.
