We will stop here at Sublette to check out the train brakes and other equipment before we continue downhill toward Antonito. Sublette is a wonderful example of the locations along the San Juan Extension where railroad maintenance crews lived all year round to maintain their 7 to 10 mile section of the line. The buildings you see here have all been restored by the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec. The oldest building on the line, built in 1880, is the log bunkhouse we’ll pass as we leave Sublette. This is a good time to go to the open car to hear more details about Sublette’s history from your Docent.
